Moved from a 15T front sprocket to a 17T. This is a great mod for the Marauder VZ800! It is SO much nicer to drive at highway speeds. I can cruise around town 30-35mph and stay in 3rd gear. The gears feel so much longer. 40mph in 4th feels like 30mph used to feel in 4th. I really don't notice any difference in the low end coming off the line. The 17T sprocket should be stock from the factory instead of the 15T sprocket. 15T sprocket isn't very friendly at highway speeds since the Marauder only has 5 gears. I highly recommend this mod to anyone with a Marauder. It was a really easy mod too. Only took 20 min from start to finish and cost me $12 for a 17T rated for a 530 chain. I'm almost tempted to try out an 18T after I do my stage 3 rejet.

Good and simple mod. Installed 17T front sprocket ....... 2000 Suzuki Marauder VZ800Y 3498837457
It would seem Suzuki have done the high gearing across the board on the 800 models which is fine if the bike never goes out of town. Luckily for you guys with the older models it is a very cheap mod, where as for us guys with the later shaft driven models it is only possible to get the same result by changing the rear drive to a VS1400 drive or similar and modding the shaft length and fitment.
However whether it is the easy route which your model allows or the more intense changeover that is required for the shaft driven models, it is an almost must do mod. The lower gearing is for sure a mod that makes the bike so much more usable a enjoyable to ride. Far less vibration and gears that go much further on a bike that feels like it is finally running how it should have done from the beginning.

Exactly. The stock drive ratio would be fine if there was a 6th gear. Suzuki dropped the ball on this aspect as they did with the really restrictive intakes on the Marauders. At least both of these issues are fairly easy and cheap to fix if you're handy with a spanner and can follow simple directions.

It does look a bit tight for an 18 tooth sprocket? You need to go smaller (less teeth) on the back Morgan? I'm know you know that, because we discussed it in France Installed 17T front sprocket ....... 2000 Suzuki Marauder VZ800Y 852880

Yeah, I thought about this same thing. The front sprocket is just so much easier to change. I'll probably put on a rear with 1 tooth less when I pull the wheels off to be sent for powder coating. It won't be as drastic as moving to an 18T in the front but I think it will give me the perfect balance that I'm looking for.

I've decided to swap out the rear sprocket to a 46T from a 48T. There difference is negligable off the line but it will drop about another 110rpm from the engine at 70mph. Should be exactly the gearing I'm looking for. Plus I found a harden steel 46T rear sprocket in black for $31.00. Sorted.

Already one step ahead of you. Going to swap out the rotor when I powder coat the wheels black. Been sourcing black front rotors but I can't find one under like $135.
