PostSubject: C800 M800 Heated Seat   C800 M800 Heated Seat Icon_minitimeTue Jun 28, 2011 10:29 pm

Been thinking about modifications tonight & I have come up with the next one, which will be done over the next couple of months. I am a bit premature in posting this as I have not as yet done it but I thought I would share with you all my next one before I do it.
Last winter one of the things that limited my riding was the cold, so in readiness for this winter I will be fitting some bar inserts to give me warm hands. I will use bar inserts as I have aftermarket grips that look flipping ace & there is no way I am going to take those off to put but ugly looking heated grips on.
Having done that I will then modify the stock seat in to a heated seat, this I will control by splicing into the wiring for the heated handle bar inserts so as to control them both from a single adjustable dialled switch.
In my search tonight for a suitable heating element that can be placed within the stock seat setup I have come across the following Ebay Link where for the reasonable price of £33.50 + £4.99 for postage, you get a pair of carbon fibre element retrofit heated seat pads.
The actual fitting of the element within the stock seat setup is a simple process of removing the seat cover, placing the pads in position and recovering. However getting the wiring worked out may be a little more complicated than it may at first seem but will still be a relatively easy task. For the wiring I will call on “Doc Cox” to check the circuit before posting a full write up, instructions & pictures.

Just thought you may find this interesting & any input, criticism or ideas would as always be gratefully received

Well I received the heat pads during the week so this modification will happen very shortly, just waiting on the heated bar inserts and it's game on!

Here is a picture of the heat pads which I will install, they can be cut in any direction so there is no issue with having to much heat pad where you don't want it.

Nice initiative mr. Intruder! The heating web can be bought in a automobil-store, as a universel seat heating unit for cars.
Be sure!!! that you have enough power on your battery! Its only 12 Amps. I dont know, if the generator can be adjusted to develope more power - if so, I would replace the old batt. with a 16 amp battery.
In my wild dreams, I've been thinking of connecting 1/4" coppertubes to the radiatorwater on the bike, and place it under the seatcover.
But will follow your construction!

I got a feeling the seat pad I bought draws 10amp for both pads, so I need to find out if it will by default use less if I only use 1 of them and it's cut down by one third

The heat pads I have bought take up less than 10 amps when both pads are in use on the highest setting! I have spoken to Doc Cox and we will be doing an ampage test on the one I will be using after I have cut it down to size.
Which if we are correct in our presumption, the finished heated seat should soak up no more than about 3.5 amps on full power, so this should not cause a power issue!
I will post the ampage results at the weekend.

Well I did a bit more today!
First of all I worked out roughly how much of the heat mat I wanted and cut off the excess which was about a third.

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0053

Next I took the seat cover off; this task is extremely easy all you have to do is pull out the staples that are holding it on.

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0051

As you can see from the following picture, there is a thin plastic sheet between the seat cover and the sponge. Do not discard this as firstly it stops damp from penetrating through to the sponge but we will use this as a barrier from damp and put the heat matt underneath it.

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0062

Next we have to think about two issues we have with the heat mat, there is temperature controller that protrudes slightly on one side only which we will deal with by cutting out a small piece of foam for it to sit in. this can be seen in the picture that is pointed out with a downward facing arrow.
Next we have the power cable; this is pointed out by the upward facing arrow. For the power cable we will drill a hole straight through the sponge and the base of the seat, doing both of the above modifications to the sponge and seat base will hide the heat mat completely & no one would ever know you had modified the seat in any way!

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0058

A small cut out of where the temperature controller will sit

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0057

Next we will need to temporarily remove the connector from the wires so as to make threading it through the pre drilled hole that we have in the sponge and seat base. This will enable us to keep the hole nice and small.

Before
C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0060

After
C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0061

Here you can see the small hole that the threaded wires will come through under the seat pan (a nice small hole)

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0059

All you need to do now is to ensure the mat is exactly in the correct location before threading the cable through the hole and stapling the cover back on
C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0064

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0063

I still have not had a chance to do an amp draw test but I did have it on whilst the engine was running and checked my battery power indicator, shown below in the picture and it was indicating that all was fine and was illuminated at the top of the green area as it normally is

C800 M800 Heated Seat 05032011035

I have decided not to wire in the heated seat with the heated handle bar inserts, so I will need to decide where to mount the power switch.

C800 M800 Heated Seat IMG_0070

The power switch has 3 settings, power off, low power & high power. I will have to really give this some thought as it is not water proof but I want it to be easily accessible. I will probably temporarily fit the switch and swap it for a 3 position waterproof switch!
I have had the mat under test and I am really happy with the amount of heat it puts out

Well that’s all for today, I will wire it in tomorrow if I get a chance and continue with further write up and pictures of the insallation!

Good evening everyone, excellent write up and instructions, have you thought of running the power to the pads via a relay to take a bit of the the load off the switch, if I have missed the relay in the write up my apologies, we all wondered at work why he wanted a heated seat as he,s a bit of a hot arse anyway, but any of his mods are always well carried out and look the part, having seen them first hand, wonder if he,s obtained the 40mm pipe for the exhaust mod yet ? watch this space, regards Doc Cox C800 M800 Heated Seat 855947

To be honest CC I never did the final wiring and it went out of my mind after initially looking for a suitable waterproof switch that I was happy with and not finding one.
I will now do the final wiring of the seat over the next few weeks as something Farmboy wrote about installing a switch underneath his pair valve cover was an excellent idea and putting the switch in there will alow the use of the stock switch that came with the heated seat eliment. the only additional wiring I will need to do is to ensure that the heated seat only works with the ignition, otherwise it would be easy to forget and leave it on and return to the bike an hour later and find a lovelly warm seat but a bike that won't start.
I will keep you posted C800 M800 Heated Seat 3498837457
