| Hi all,
My restoration of an ageing VX800 is in progress..... however... despite only 23000 miles on the clock the spider splines are very suspect.
Question... will the spider from other models fit without modification? For some reason the VX parts are rare and expensive and many other models like the vs1400 parts quite reasonably priced and available...
Any advice or experience welcome....

| Vic I don't know about the spider but I'd not be surprised at Suzuki using the same bit's on many models. The wear on the splines etc is down to the factory not putting enough grease on the splines & it wears off quickly allowing the wear to take place. Once you've greased the splines with Moly grease you may find it a bit quieter & you'll be able to do it again quickly when you do your major servicing or when you need a new tyre. I know I'll do mine again when we get back from Brittany as I want to inspect everything in the drive chain seeing as I've done the VS1400 diff mod recently. | |

| The diff looks very much like the vl800 but gives a different part number for the casing, the part number for the hub drum (the bit with the splines in the wheel) is the same number so I'd take a guess at it being the same, Check the part numbers of the internals of the wheel to see what's interchangeable. http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-vx800-1990-ul_model14281/partslist/FIG-55.html#results

| Hey Simbo, Thanks for that - excellent info - gives me confidence (subject to any professional nay-sayers??) that the parts are the same.... I just refitted the old one today (dry fit - waiting on proper grease..) and it doesn't look quite so bad clean - maybe 15-18% of the spline width gone.... Also noticed that the retainers were also worn..... hard to buy separately so I welded the edges and ground them back to shape.... look OK for now. I guess when the bike's on the road properly... and excluding any clutch or gearbox problems..... I'll source a 'new' spider doohickey.... Maybe before then someone will confirm that the parts are indeed the same... Mick the Vic | |

| Actually seem like it will work including the suspension mount but it would seem from my research that you would be the very first person ever to have considered doing the VS1400 swap to a VX800. I wouldn't worry excessively about the limited wear to the splines, that is simply through a past lack of maintenance. Keeping it suitably greased in future will stop any excessive increase in wear. Not ideal to have any wear in the splines but from what you have said it's been found within reasonable time to stop further wear. | |
