| Hi guys, whats the best way to clean off rust and protect. I have had her 6 years now and she has been outside constantly for at least 5 of those years exposed to all elements :( There is a couple of places where rust is starting to form on the chrome and starting on the frame. What is the best way to clean it off and protect from future rust? I have recently moved to a new place that has a garage and soon I will be stripping her down as much as I can as I also have a lot of new parts to put on so she can get a very thorough clean down | |

| Steel wool soaked in WD40 has always worked for me on affected chrome. Then regular cleaning with WD on a cloth should help keep corrosion away. Avoid using steel wool on good chrome as it will scratch but it is good for removing small bubbles. Over painting the frame is a good idea once the rust is removed with wire brush or abrasive paper. Forks can be rubbed down smoothly and lacquered.

| Cola and aluminium tin foil for getting rust off chrome is another option. | |

| Is it surface rust or is it starting to raise the finish on the chrome - if you drag your mail across it, can you feel it? Surface rust, I'd start with some Solvol, if it's gone further then I'd try 0000 wire wool, but once the surface is compromised, you're just delaying the inevitable. Rust on the frame - as John says, wire brush, coarse sandpaper or coarse wire wool. Just done mine under the frame & the back of the sub-frame where the rear wheel throws up all the crap. I used Kurust followed by Hammerite smooth black. You need to try & get it off the ground & have a good look under the frame | |

| Chrome does not rust, its the rusty metal below it which starts to break through | |
