How To - Headlamp lowbeam cutoff when starting

Alrighty being as it was a nice day out today I decided to get started on some mods...

First off I hate that when we start the bike 1 there is a delay and sometimes doesn't fire up (takes a couple tries) this is because of an extra relay in the starting system called the Mitsubishi starter control relay.  (Not the Starter relay).  In newer models they deleted this useless module.


So I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone.  Delete this module and add a Headlamp lowbeam kill when the start button is pressed.  (eliminates some of the load from battery). It's all done right at the fuse block on the left side.

Needed one 30 amp standard relay, 4 female blade connectors (or relay harness) and butt connectors.

1. Remove left cover.
2. Pull up on Mitsubishi module (it's right beside starter relay) 3 wires going into it.. Yellow/Green, Yellow Black, Black/White
3. cut all 3 and toss the module in your neighbors yard so he runs over it when cutting grass. (only if he ticks you off)
4. Join Y/G & Y/B together with a female blade and connect to pin 85
5. attach a female blade on B/W wire and connect to Pin 86

Now to the fuse block... on my bike the lowbeam is white... looking at the fuse block you will see two white wires right beside each other.. you want the white wire that is on the outside going to the head lamp. (if your not sure pull the fuse #2) turn the key to on, then probe the terminals with a test light or multimeter with it grounded to battery.  One terminal will read 12v (you don't wan this one).

1. Cut white wire (leave lots from fuse block) the end coming from the fuse block.  attach female blade (may need extra wire) and connect it to pin 30.
2. White wire running to bike attach female blade (again may need more wire) and connect to pin 87A. 
3. Insolate pin 87 with tape or heatshrink.

Now reassemble and your good to go. (my relay had a metal bolt holder so I turned it upside down and inserted it where the old Mitsubishi module went.)
Now you will no longer have a slight delay when starting and the Headlamp will turn off when your pushing the starter button.

* Newer models that don't have the MMM you can still do this mod wiring is the same except for Pin 85 you just need to "T" tap the Y/G wire from the starter and run a ground from Pin 86.*

This is a great modification that all bikes need as the battery drain can be enough to stop a bike starting.

Dave can you explain what you have done to your lights and why it is that you will be doing this mod as well as it may assist others that have plans to do this mod

All I did on my model is splice into one of the headlamp wires and put in a switch which I have hidden on the underside of the side cover under the seat so that I can turn off the main beam & just have the side lights on when required. Very simple to do.


The mod that CanadianCruiser has worked out & written here will be another benefit to my battery saving mods that I have so far done, which also includes fitting a bigger battery ( - LINKY - )

Thanks guys...  I can't do the mod you did with just turning off the headlamp... in Canada vehicles need daytime running lights.  Closest thing I can do is add Hazards... (can't link yet but got diagram up on another thread.)
