| You can get cheap mufflers without replacing the whole exhaust - don't know much about these but often wondered if that's the cheapest aftermarket option. But for cheap I would have a go at a simple mod: whack a pipe up the middle, through the first and then second baffle. Start with a pointed stake/drill bit and then use a 3/4 inch sharpened pipe with a tommy bar in the end to help extraction. Will give a much deeper sound but not silly loud. Cost next to nothing. Cheap pipes can have their problems such as burnt trousers whereas the modded stocks look feel just the same. That's what I would do first although it is a non-reversable change. Many have done this. I would not punch holes in the rear plate like many also do - it looks a bit naff TBH. | |

| Trouble with aftermarkets is most guys end up quietening them down as the volume can be quite a shock. So that's more expense/effort. The how loud is loud? debate goes on and on . Listening to videos is not much help either apart from comparing one pipe with another - they are all bloody loud to start with! In defence of loud pipes, they are safer and transform the Intruder into an impressive sounding beast. Pipes are relatively easy to fit and refit so if things don't turn out the way you intended, you can always go back to stock. From the sound of your original post it would seem modified stock would be just right for youir requirements but like many of us the lure of new pipes can be very tempting. Best of luck, whatever you decide. | |

| I am with John about using your stock pipes, but,I would start by drilling four 1/2" holes in the backplates first,to see if this gives you what you want, then try a couple more holes,if you do not get the desired effect, you can then go down the other route John states,or if you want to go back to stock place two plates back in to cover the holes up.One of the main reasons I renewed mine was the fact I just did not like the length of the stock pipes. | |

| Don't know the law in Aus but here in UK if the want to push it they can issue a ticket for exhaust modification i.e. drilling holes. The internal central hole is much harder to see let alone prove! But as alfie92 points out you can replace the backplate after drilling. My experience was that with the back plate drilled all I got was a bike that farted! The deeper more cruiser-like sound did not come till I knocked out the middle. Debaffling is probably better than both and you can then replace the backplate if you have one made up. There are some videos on here of pipes with all the above mods. Experience would show that although many, many Intruder owners across the world have modified their stock pipes in one way or other, the majority have ended up with aftermarkets. Pipe mod is a good place to start though! | |

| Thanks guys, all good info. I did go to the thread with the videos and liked the sound of the Jardine Slash cut rumblers and the Roadburner 3", but was wondering about volume and cost. Looking them up with a google search said "to exeee for me". I didn't like the sound of the modified by drilling holes or the punched out ones so I'm still looking. Thanks for the help so far guys. The here don't normally stop for noise unless you are making a hell of a racket. I know no one who has been pulled over or when pulled over got booked for after market or modified exhaust. But, I've never had a speeding ticket on the bike. So i don't think what I have in mind will be a problem.

Thanks for this, I will look up how to do it, and do you know of a video with sound so I can get an idea of what it sounds like? | |
