Hello to all
My name is Richard and last week I took ownership of a 2005 vz 800 intruder and I'm so pleased with it the previous owner and yes only  one, has loved and cherished this motorcycle and I'm so very grateful to him and will do My best to carry on looking after it as well as he has. I'm busy adding my own little extras but I'm already smitten.

Hi Richard,
also a recent VL800 owner too. Mine is a 'downsizing' with retirement purchase. Downsizing 'fleet' size to two bikes. This is my 'everyday/everything' bike. Also impressed with it. I was going to buy a new Super Meteor tbh, but this bike came up in a local dealer (2013 with 12000km) literally showroom condition, Power very similar, I'd give the comfort edge to the C50T. Looking at the purchase price, then the extras I'd still have needed to fit, crash bars, spotlamps, footboards, rear panniers, plus Enfeild don't do a full sissy bar with parcel rack. Yes I've spent about the same amount on the VL, (intake/fuel controller, stereo, matching rear luggage/sissy bar pack, but saved around $3knz between the two bikes. (Plus shaft drive, not a chain, which I think Enfeild need to look at a belt option).
Many will say the 800 is 'underpowered', I disagree, unless you ride it beyond it's 'design brief'. I find it quite capable solo and have done a few hundred km's trips. I've set mine up to do distances (bearing in mind NZ's national limit is 100km/60mph, so the C50's performance is ideally matched). It has enough power solo to cope with NZ's hills (mountains elsewhere, lol) just don't expect it to 'power away' on steep inclines, but it holds speed fine.
I did a lot of reading here and other Volusia sites, and the one thing I would say is 'expensive' but worth it, if this is going to be a long term ownership? Honest Abe the standard exhaust (it;s not a big block, it's never going to sound like a big block with a loud aftermarket system) and I have gone for the Gman intake, with the Dobeck EJK fuel controller (a bit cheaper than the Gman, and the same unit)
This doesn't make massive changes, but it does improve pull a bit, makes the motor a bit more willing, but for me the most noticeable was that I found the standard bikes 'fast roll on' a tad 'sleepy' in response, this upgrade certainly removes that. I've been used to a Roadstar (Wildstar in Europe) 1600, A royal Star Venture (400kg full dress tourer), Royal Star Tour Classic (Gen1) and yes the bike is a little physically smaller, but still plenty of legroom etc, and a lot nicer in traffic. (What I have kept is my Guzzi California).
