PostSubject: Debaffled C800   Debaffled C800 Icon_minitimeMon Apr 25, 2011 11:31 pm

Bought the hole saws, wrecked my drill and had to finish off with a hacksaw. Once the plates were cut, the baffles came out in less than a minute but then I had already bashed 3/4 inch hole through the middle previously. Have been reading up on exhaust packing and mesh insert to deaden the sound after debaffling. The through pipes with holes right through to the cat are pretty loud. I've done a couple of prototypes with the firbreglass/wire mesh inserts but am still experimenting to get the best sound. I read a guys write up who claimed by this method he got a 'better than Harley' note from his C50 stock - not sure about that! Well I went out with my pipes newly opened up (before packing) and turned a few heads in Mumbles today Debaffled C800 215375 Loud but still a tad high pitched when opening the throttle hard - will post pics and write up when I have got the sound I want. I've also cut off the end piece which I will fire-paste onto a doughnut plate I had made and can fix back outside the pipe rebate if ever I want to give the impression it is stock for any reason such as Debaffled C800 460788 MOT or resale (no way!) Will post pics soon.

I will look forward to following this one as your going in to totally new ground for me with opening up the stockers and then packing to change the tone. Very interesting study

I agree the debaffled stock exhaust is still a tad on the high pitched side, however it does sound much more fitting for a cruiser than it does stock.

I too also shagged my drill when I opened up my stockers but I had read in numerous places that this would be the case, so I Pulled a crafty one.
I bought a drill from Argos for £9.99 used that and took it back completely knackered about 3 hours later & demanded a refund! Debaffled C800 594857

Debaffled C800 804997 Crash, gobbledegook explained now.............The end of each stock exhaust has a small projecting pipe, as you know. When debaffling, they have to be removed . Instead of discarding them, I have hack sawed them off the rest of the baffle to reuse if needed. The problem is that the rings around them (doughnuts - hole in the middle) are no good once cut out. So I had two new ones made up for £5 by a metal worker I know. Toninght I fixed the new doughnuts and end pipes together using exhaust paste. When using the 3 inch hole saw to remove the doughnut plate, it leaves a small flange rebated into the end of the pipe. Using exhaust paste for a more permanent fix or silicone for a more temporary one and spraying with H.Temp black paint I can return the end plates to look as if they are original when in fact the pipes have no baffles inside Laughing If I were selling the bike one day, for example, the buyer may be fooled into thinking it is stock. I might try them on soon just to satisfy my curiosity. It should make things quieter which would be ok for an unsypathetic MOT tester or an over zealous :cops: rectification notice.

Hope that explains it better than my poor 1st attempt at the English language Debaffled C800 474255

Have inserted some exhaust packing held in with some DIY mesh. It's really loud enough for my neighbours! The packing stops the tone rising too much when opening the throttle. The hole punched through the 2nd plate makes it louder than the straight debaffle probably. Here is a camera phone type video with a shot of the internals. I rode with a Sportster today for a while - I thought my sound was louder and deeper.

Now that sounds more like a cruiser Debaffled C800 2170595768

Is there much difference after packing is placed inside?

Deadens it a little. I did try with an extra layer behind a dog muzzle shape mesh but it quietened the bark too much(dog muzzle...bark Debaffled C800 474255 ) so I'll stay with the one layer. What I do like is when you blip the throttle on tick over it makes a lovely deep burble. I tried the doughnut plates stuck back on with silicone - quietens a lot. One broke loose after a few miles so if ever I need to 'return to stock' I will fix with exhaust paste - that stuff is like rock. So I'm happy for the moment. If ever I want more it will have to be aftermarket or a bigger bike! I think my fuel consumption will be better now because I shift up earlier - before I was increasing the revs to hear it roar but now I get the same in 4th as I got in 3rd before. Just been for a 40 mile spin - used 5th much more than I used to! There is one stage further to go and that is to bash or cut out the 2nd plate exposing all of the cat and push the packing further in but I am loathe to go there. I have read that debaffling the older carbed bikes produced a deeper throatier sound and that the FI models need more gutting to get the same. But I think we might be getting into fuel processor territory here so I'll leave alone.

So quiet on the roads today (Royal Wedding) decided to go for another run this afto. Ended up at M&P the local bike haunt -immediately this guy comes over and asks what pipes I have as they had a really good note - just what he wanted - he and his mate had listened with interest as my bike came in. When I told him they were modified stock, he didn't seem to be expecting that answer. He said he wanted his new Yam 1300 cruiser to sound like that - I explained about debaffling. I felt pretty good. Next best thing to aftermarket if you don't quite want to wake the dead!

Went down to Mumbles today and blow me if the guy who asked me about my exhaust yesterday didn't come running towards me again. 'I've done it just like you suggested - went on the Yam website & found how they do it, went out today and bought the drill and here it is much better - thanks mate!' Well that was a quick result but there's one happy bloke anyway. As he rode away, there was a nice rumble to replace the 'Yamfart' he had yesterday.
