| Morning - I've been searching for a VX800. Since we've just had the cam belt changed on our old Fiesta (£600+!), I wondered how long cam belts last in a VX - I assume a V engine has two!? I'm just looking at one with 45k miles from 1991. The Ford specs say to change the cam chain every 8 years or 80k miles. Is this the same for a bike? And, dare I ask, is the cost similar? Cheers, Chris | |

| Cam 'Chains' in a VX not Belts, Should be good for double that mileage if the bike has been cared for. | |

| Wow - thanks for the replies gents, I had no idea... That means both chains will have to be replaced, basically, every year?! What a shocker! Armed with this information, I searched and found Carl's post from 2013 - Quote :
- ... I had to have cam chain and tensioners replaced TWICE... (one of the first Volusia VL800s K1)... The first time was after about three years but. About four years later the other one needed replacing so I told them to replace both sets at the same time.
First time... they only replaced them on one cylinder... took about three weeks and cost just over £400.
The second time took about 4 weeks because the parts had to be imported from Japan and cost me just over £800. I know it's a newer, VL model, but I imagine it'd be much the same for the older VXs. And, in the same thread, Jason said, "I was quoted £1500...". This is not what I had expected. Is it because it's a 'V' engine? I'm scared now! Cheers, Chris | |

| Well, thanks to Dave for PDF of the VX800 Service Manual, which, it turns out, 'has nothing mentioned up to 24,000 miles'. Miguel/Mick has been suitably chastised in my eBay/wanted thread. (Wow, he is soooo bad!)
So, the search for a VX800 is back on!
Cheers,
Chris | |

| Thanks for the profound apologies Mick - much appreciated. Your little 'joke' did make for a very stressful day yesterday though! I come here because you guys have years of experience with Suzuki Vs, so when you say '3000', I believe it. Why wouldn't I? Still, I do appreciate the contrition and readily accept your apology since you obviously meant no malice or nastiness - so please note that do happily forgive you mate! Cheers, Chris | |

| VX800s are pretty bullet proof if oil n filters have been done regular , I personally wouldn't change the chain and guides unless I could hear them chattering , besides its usually the tensioners that go and in that case I'd replace those with manually adjustable tensioners as they will never need changing again . | |
