| After buying new tyres to be fitted over winter, I've been reading up quite a bit on the subject of tubeless tyres on spoked rims? I've read that using a metal specific silicone sealer around the spoke ends to seal them up for tubeless tyres works? I'll be fitting tubes within my tyre's, but I'm thinking this could be something worth doing anyway? just to slow down the escape of air through the spoke ends in the event of a puncture. What do you think? | |

| Sim that sounds like a good idea. It might give you that few seconds when you need it. Can't hurt anything that I can see. | |

| New front tyre yesterday Sim, tube already "in" from new, so must be a good thing. | |

| Been attempted for many years running tubeless tyres with spoked wheels some people with great success some not as great. You would think this would be down to a fine art somewhere now and maybe it is, I just have not read enough about it. | |

| I would have thought it best to fit a tube with a tubeless tyre, I'm sure the bike manufacterers would fit tubeless tyres to spoked rims if it was 100% safe and practical to do so. Also it is always best to replace innertubes with new ones on a tyre change. | |

| I agree on fitting tubes in the tyres, and I will be fitting new tubes when I put them on, I was just wondering if it might slow the escape of air in the event of a puncture? we all know how fast inner tubes deflate when punctured | |

| Have a bloke coming to fit stainless spokes to my wheels, mentioned this to him,he reckons you can't seal spoked wheels even with the newer brass nipples, hence the need for tubes on tubeless tyres. He's been doing it for 30 plus yrs | |

| Just found a guy that has put 72000 miles on a spoked wheel converted to tubeless by covering the spoke holes with Marine Adhesive Sealant 5200 He has also got a few mates that have done it as well and swear by it. Could be the way to go | |

| I often think about this and have researched it hundreds of times. I have known of many riders that have done this sort of thing to Scramblers and sworn by it & I have been nearly there myself so many times. However I am still not quite there with my trust of this sort of modification yet, I am still concerned that as long as no body is doing it professionally and putting their name to it and taking the risk of the possible comeback should it not work that there is still to much concern there. I am and always have been willing to take chances and even though the stuff they are using nowadays is much more superior to what it was in the early days when the pioneers were first doing it, I still do not have the confidence as of yet to be a try it and see kind of guy, for the sake of safety. Sounds like a good idea though Sim to try the tube with a spoke sealer for additional safety rather than trying to go fully tubeless on spoked wheels. | |

| Bloody hell I read that wrong when I first read it, sealing the spokes and putting in a tube to slow down the scarily fast blow out of normal tubed tyres is a cracking idea | |

| It must be the way I explain things I know what I mean in my head, putting it in words is a hole different ball game though :what1: | |

| Just been reading up on fitting a tube in a tubed tyre & this is what I have discovered:
If the inside of the tyre is ribbed, that can chafe against the tube, generating heat and wear, so ideally you want a tyre with a smooth interior, or you can alternatively get the tyre fitters to use loads of French chalk to ‘lubricate’ the tube/tyre.
Be aware that fitting a tube reduces the speed rating of the tyre, so a W-rated tyre that’s good for 167mph, becomes an H-rated tyre that has a maximum rating of 130mph & so on. | |

| Good info Dave Just checked the Metzeler's I have waiting in the garage, They're not ribbed, but they're far from smooth so I'll be generous with the chalk when I fit them , They're H rated so should be about the limit for the Intruder | |

| Yes I agree Sim. I have just done a varied search on the rating speed drop for the rear as well as the front tyre and they should be fine for what you have planned. I really like how you have planned this and will probably join you on this sealed spoke with tube safety mod. | |

| When done this type of mod will really ease your mind about the chance of the normal affects of a high speed blowout | |
